Thirteen has recently announced it is working in partnership with Middlesbrough Council to build 145 new affordable and much-needed homes in Gresham as part of the area’s regeneration and is appealing to the local community for their memories, photographs and stories of the area in times past. Working with Heritage Unlocked Historian Dr Tosh Warwick, the project team want to explore the history of the area and uncover stories of the communities of the town centre location over the decades. By revealing the heritage of the redevelopment zone, the area’s past will help its bright future.

As well as appealing for memories, photographs and stories of the area, Heritage Unlocked will be working with collections from local archives, community groups, libraries and museums to help provide an overview of the area’s story and celebrate its strengths.

Chris Smith, Thirteen’s executive director of business growth, said: “We’re working closely with Middlesbrough Council and the Mayor to develop a vision for the area that celebrates everything great about living and working in Middlesbrough. We know that the area has a vibrant past and we want to celebrate this with old residents and new. In bringing together the brilliant work already done in the area by the community, with that of Thirteen and our partners, we feel we can make a real impact here that will benefit everyone.”

Heritage Unlocked’s Dr Tosh Warwick added: “It is fantastic that Thirteen are exploring ways to recognise the history and heritage of the area as part of their transformation of Gresham in creating a bright future for the area. We are very keen to hear the stories of local communities with memories, photographs and tales of the area and would particularly welcome personal stories and images of the area from family albums or that capture everyday life.”
