Heritage Unlocked was established with the vision to help business, education, local authority and regeneration projects to enhance their heritage by delivering positive, lasting legacies for clients and the wider community.

Drawing upon over a decade of experience working in the heritage and history fields across consultancy, Higher Education and Local Authority roles, Heritage Unlocked utilises expertise working with businesses, community groups, Heritage Lottery Fund (National Lottery Heritage Fund) schemes, Higher Education providers, museums, regeneration projects, REF and research programmes to deliver high impact outcomes for heritage and history activities and projects.

Expertise and Services


Heritage Projects and Events

Drawing upon over a decade of experience working with archives, heritage and history sectors, Heritage Unlocked offers expertise in developing, securing funding for and delivering heritage projects. This includes work on the HLF (National Lottery Heritage Fund) £2.6m Tees Transporter Bridge Visitor Experience, Middlesbrough Town Hall’s multi-million pound refurbishment, blue plaque trails, Resilient Heritage funding and First World War projects, as well as organising a number of history and heritage conferences and events.


CORPORATE HISTORIES

As well as working on a number of corporate histories of famous iron and steel manufacturing companies, we have also collaborated with businesses large and small to explore the unique stories of their industries, people and premises, spanning multinational global engineering firms to local pie makers.


Public Lectures and Talks

We have extensive experience of delivering a range of history and heritage public lectures and talks at international conferences, Heritage Open Days, Local History Month, community events, history societies, local authority events, Topics covered include industrial heritage, iron and steel history, the FIFA World Cup, Middlesbrough Football Club, Tees Transporter Bridge, life in Victorian and Edwardian Britain, regeneration and heritage, historic landmarks and the River Tees.


RESEARCH SERVICES

Heritage Unlocked’s Dr Tosh Warwick has extensive experience of carrying out research across archives, libraries, museums, and private collections in the UK and Australia including The British Library, The National Archives, The Wellcome Library, State Library of New South Wales, Modern Records Centre and various local archival and library collections.


Community and Education Workshop

A range of community and education workshops catering for all ages and groups can be provided. Drawing upon experience of developing education and visitor resources as part of major industrial heritage projects, a number of Higher Education roles and community outreach projects, workshops can be provided on local history, carrying out archival research, digital resources and oral history.


 

Academic Expertise AND PUBLICATIONS

Dr Tosh Warwick lists ‘BBC Breakfast’, ‘Great British Railway Journeys’, ‘Inside Out’, ‘Match of the Day’, ‘Channel 4 News’ and BBC Radio’s ‘Journey Down the Tees’ amongst a number of TV and radio programmes he has appeared on. He has also published on an extensive range of topics. His books include ‘Central Middlesbrough Through Time’ (2013), ‘River Tees: From Source to Sea’ (as co-author, 2016), ‘The Tees Transporter Bridge’ (2019), ‘Memories of Middlesbrough in the 1970s and 1980s’ (2020), ‘Memories of Stockton-on-Tees in the 1970s and 1980s’ (2021) and ‘Historic Middlesbrough’ (2022). His articles have been published in leading journals including Urban History, International Journal of Local and Regional History, North Korean Review and Sport in History.
